Inicios

Saludos

Although the true beginning can be traced back a couple years,  we’ll start off with the day La Poderosa, my trusty bicycle since 2008, suffered a break while riding over rough ground. By 2014 this bike had already gone to many adventures and served as daily transportation for a very active college student, so it was not of much surprise that after 6 years of use, it was time to hang it up on the wall.

A problem arose: What will I use now? What bicycle should I get to replace La Poderosa?

As a fan of local consumption and promoting small businesses, I liked the idea of looking up a Mexican company with any innovative bicycle projects. I also started thinking about the bamboo-made bicycles that were growing in popularity, and reputation, around the world with bike aficionados. This led me to wonder if any long distance trips had been made with a bamboo bicycle, and whether anyone in Mexico was developing such bikes.  Finally, I found Bamboocycles, a mexican manufacturer who was working on designs for long distances thanks to a story about someone who pedaled one of their bicycles across the United States from east to west. This was the one!

Through their website http://www.bamboocycles.com I found that they held an HTM/DIY (Do It Yourself) workshop in Guadalajara, where you get to build your own bamboo bicycle under the instructions and supervision of their own craftsmen.  This would not only mean a solution to replacing my broken bicycle, it would also be a fulfilling experience to be able to build my bicycle with my own two hands, a bicycle that I hoped could be the start a long-term project that I had been toying with for quite some time: setting out to pedal across the American continent.

Keep visiting my posts to get pictures, videos and comments on the experience of building a unique and personalized bicycle, as well as other future bicycle adventures.

*Soon I will be in contact with armon-manto, a Mexican business dedicated to the design and manufacture of bicycle accessories for urban cyclists,  whose recent designs in heavy-weight trailers I’m interested in acquiring so I can share my future adventures with Flok.
